The recovery isn’t done, and neither are we

Now that most families and individuals are stabilized, the necessary long-term recovery work begins for those affected by the storm. With the help of our partners, BakerRipley is leveraging our disaster recovery experience gained through extensive work in our communities around Houston.

Our case manager and disaster recovery teams are out in our communities – canvassing door to door in order to assess the impact and immediate needs of our neighbors.

We’ve learned that long-term recovery is about one family, one person at a time. Our case managers have knowledge about a wide variety of supports and systems that exist to help people. They will become part of the family’s care plan, not only referring them to resources but guiding them through the different recovery processes.

Our experience has taught us that this must be a coordinated effort with our partners for it to be efficient. So far we’ve helped more than 100 families and close to 300 individuals find rapid housing in collaboration with Harris County, HUD, FEMA and the Red Cross.

Our community centers are at the core of our operations, and right now they are acting as neighborhood distribution sites for basic items to help our neighbors need. These centers are open during working hours and operate on a walk-in basis. Anyone is welcome to come and receive supplies, and talk with a staff member on additional resources we can connect them to.

We’re also connected to the United Way 211 Helpline to help families get in touch with service connectors who are knowledgable about a variety of systems and support that exists to help people impacted by Harvey. Folks who need help should contact 211, and let the representative know that they are “interested in receiving long-term case management.”
