What is Head Start?

Head Start at BakerRipley has three distinct programs for families.

  1. Home-Based
  2. Early Head Start
  3. Head Start

Home-Based: Savoy Home Based is part of the Early Head Start/ Head Start program. Home Based is a school readiness program that serves, not only the child, but the entire family. As parent educators we work under the concept that you, the parent, is your child first teacher. Our visits support you and your child in their developmental growth with a focus on social emotional, language, physical and cognitive area through 90 minute weekly visits in the comfort of your own home. We provide comprehensive services through parent education opportunities, disabilities services, family support, monthly socializations, and referrals.

Who qualifies for Home Based Program? Prenatal women and families whose child(ren) are under the age of 3. Requirements are the following:

  • Child’s birth certificate or doctor’s letter confirming mother’s pregnancy.
  • Proof of Harris County residency
  • Income Verification
  • Parent Identification
  • Disability documentation (if applicable)

Early Head Start: Early Head Start serves children from six weeks to three years of age. Early Head Start provide similar services as preschool Head Start, but they are tailored for the unique needs of infants and toddlers. Early Head Start classrooms promote the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of infants and toddlers through safe and developmentally enriching caregiving. This prepares these children for continued growth and development and eventual success in school and life. All supplies are provided, including breakfast, lunch, snacks, diapers, and formula for infants. Children attend school from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, with a daily schedule that includes lessons, circle time, centers, outdoor play, nap time and more. With a ratio of two teachers to eight children per classroom, children receive plenty of nurturing and individualized attention.

Head Start: Designed for children ages 3 to 5, Head Start at BakerRipley is a comprehensive, school readiness elevation program. Children learn from a Pre-K curriculum adopted by the State of Texas, including science, math, literacy, writing, art, and music. Children attend school from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, with a daily schedule that includes lessons, circle time, centers, outdoor play, nap time and more. Teachers are certified and/or have a four-year college degree; maximum class size is 20 children with a teacher and a teacher assistant. All supplies are provided, including breakfast, lunch and snacks each day.

Child Development

Children in Early Head Start and Head Start are screened for developmental milestones including speech/language, hearing, vision, growth, and overall advancement so that any concerns can be addressed early. Children already diagnosed with a disability are welcome in the program.

Parent Engagement

Parents are very involved in Head Start and Early Head Start at BakerRipley. Considered their child’s first teachers, parents are welcome anytime to observe, volunteer, participate in leadership roles, or attend workshops and events. At least three times a year, families meet with their family development worker to talk about life and set goals. A program for fathers provides opportunities for dads to make special memories with their children as well.

Eligibility

To enroll in Head Start or Early Head Start at BakerRipley families must meet income requirements based on national poverty levels. You will also need:

  • Your child’s birth certificate
  • Your child’s current immunization record
  • Parent Identification
  • Proof of address (current lease agreement/ utility bill)
  • Proof of household income (tax forms, pay stubs, award/benefit letters, child support,etc)
